چکیده

Mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency of gamma rays sodium azide and their combination treatments were studied in the genotype of urdben variety T9. The usefulness of any mutagen in plant breeding depends not only on its effectiveness but also upon its efficiency. Mutagenic effectiveness is a measure of the frequency of mutations induced by unit mutagen dose, whereas mutagenic efficiency is measure of proportion of mutations in relation to undesirable changes like lethality, sterility and meiotic aberrations etc. Synergetic as well as antagonistic effects may occur when various physical and chemical mutagens are used in combinations. The frequency of mutagenic efficiency and effectiveness was found to be highest at lower doses.

ESTIMATION OF VARIABILITY, HERITABILITY AND GENETIC ADVANCE IN MUTANT POPULATIONS OF BLACK GRAM (Vigna mungo L. Hepper)

Genetic variability and heritability estimates with genetic advance of traits are essential for crop improvement. In this investigation, variability induced by gamma rays and ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) for different quantitative traits including plant height (cm), flowering time (days), number of primary branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, number of s...

Cytogenetic and biochemical competency of chamomile essential oil against γ-rays induced mutagenic effects in mice

Background: Chamomile essential oil (CEO) hauls out from Matricaria chamomilla L., is a well-known anti-oxidant. Oxidative stress induces clastogenic and biochemical disorders after γ-irradiation of animals. Materials and Methods: Mice were divided into five groups. Control group received vehicle only.              &nbs...

The Influence of Gamma-rays on the Injury and Chromosomal Aberrations of Long Bean (Vigna sesquipedalis, Fruw.)

The effects of gamma-rays on three varieties of long bean (Vigna sesquipedalis, Fruw), namely Melaka, Local Black and Local Long were studied using five doses ranging from 10 to 50 kR. Both Chromosomal aberrations and characteristics related to physiological damage were used to study radiation sensitivity of the varieties. In general, gamma radiation did not affect % seed germination but caused...
